The two bands of ultraviolet light, UVA and UVB, penetrate the skin, causing pigment darkening and an increase in melanin levels. Long-term exposure to ultraviolet light dramatically increases the risk of developing skin cancer. Basal cell skin cancer and squamous cell skin cancer are treatable when detected early, but melanoma can be fatal.
